Let's start with the basics. There are two main categories of design files: Vector & Bitmap.
A Vector File is one where the image is made of lines that connect with dots (or nodes) to create elements of the design. The advantage to a vector file is that it can be sized to nearly any dimension without losing image quality and those nice crisp lines. The major disadvantages are limits to the amount of detail or effects filtering/rendering you can do - simple gradients fine, detailed photo realistic chrome not so much.
A Bitmap File is one where the image is made from a grid of pixels that vary in color. The advantage to a bitmap file is that you can do some very detailed filter/rendering work to create photo realistic images. The major disadvantage to a bitmap file is that once the file's size has been set, it cannot be enlarged without negatively affecting image quality.
When you get your logo created by &Abel Art and Design, you get your logo in a variety of Vector & Bitmap files.
VECTOR FILES:
File 1 - .eps • An .eps file is a vector file format that can be used by a wide variety of design software
File 2 - .ai • An .ai file is a vector file format associated with Adobe Illustrator (common design software)
File 3 - .cdr • A .cdr file is a vector file format associated with Corel Draw (common design software)
BITMAP FILES:
File 4 - .psd • A .psd file is a workable, layered bitmap file associated with Adobe Photoshop (common design software)
File 5 - .pdf • A .pdf file is a non-workable bitmap file used by a wide variety of design software for high resolution display
File 6 - .jpg • A .jpg file is a non-workable bitmap file typically used for low resolution display
File 7 - .png • A .png file is non-workable bitmap file typically used for web design as it has a transparent background
Why is it important to get all seven of these file formats?
Without them, you will likely have nothing but headaches when trying to get your logo produced on various items. For example, if you have a .jpg file and want to get an embroidered shirt made with your logo, you will likely have to pay design fees to have the embroidery digitizer rework your logo (perhaps inaccurately) in order to have the vector format used throughout that industry. Avoid those headaches now, and get all the files you will ever need.
